UV Water Treatment in Farmers Branch
A UV system passes every gallon entering your home past a 254-nanometer lamp that scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot multiply. No chemicals, no change in taste. We size the chamber to your flow rate and fit the prefilter it needs to work.
What UV Does, and What It Does Not
City water arrives disinfected, so UV is an added layer, not a rescue. It earns its place in three situations: a household member with a weakened immune system, a home that already runs whole-house carbon (which strips the chlorine or chloramine residual that keeps pipes clean downstream), and families who want protection that does not depend on the utility during a main break or boil-water notice.
UV only treats living microbes. It does not remove chlorine, lead, hardness minerals or dissolved chemicals. That is why we often pair it with whole-home filtration ahead of it, or reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking water, and we will tell you plainly if UV alone will not solve what is bothering you.
What Your UV Installation Includes
Correctly sized UV chamber
We match the unit to your home's peak flow in gallons per minute, not the number of bathrooms. An undersized chamber lets water pass too fast to receive a full UV dose.
Sediment prefilter
A 5-micron cartridge goes upstream. Particles can shade microbes from the light, and fine silt coats the quartz sleeve and cuts the dose reaching the water.
Quartz sleeve and lamp
The lamp sits inside a quartz sleeve that keeps it dry while letting UV-C light through. We seat the O-rings and check the sleeve for clarity before startup.
Controller and alarm
The ballast powers the lamp and warns you with a light and tone if the lamp fails or reaches end of life. Units with an intensity sensor also flag a fouled sleeve.
Bypass valves and line sanitizing
We install a bypass so service never shuts off your water for long, then sanitize the plumbing downstream so the system starts on clean pipe.
Photos and written records
We photograph your existing plumbing and the finished install, and leave the model, serial and lamp date in writing. Those records matter if you ever need to file an insurance claim for water damage.
Signs UV Treatment Makes Sense for Your Home
Someone at home is medically vulnerable
Chemotherapy, transplant medications and newborns all lower tolerance for waterborne microbes. UV adds a barrier that works on every tap, including the shower.
You filter out the chlorine
Whole-house carbon improves taste but removes the disinfectant residual. A UV unit after the carbon tank restores protection for the water heading into your pipes.
Boil-water notices leave you uneasy
North Texas freezes and main breaks bring occasional notices. UV keeps treating as long as it has power, though you should still follow official guidance.
Recurring slime or odor at fixtures
Pink film in showers or a musty smell at one faucet can point to bacterial growth in the lines. We check whether it is plumbing, a water heater issue or a case for UV before recommending anything.
How a UV Install Runs
- 1
Phone conversation and water test
You call, we talk through why you are considering UV, and we set up a water test. Hardness and iron readings decide what pretreatment the lamp will need.
- 2
Site check and written quote
We measure flow, find the main line, confirm a grounded outlet within reach of the ballast, and give you a line-item quote by phone or in person.
- 3
Install day
We shut the main, cut in the bypass, mount the prefilter and chamber, and wire the controller to a GFCI-protected outlet. Most installs take a few hours, and we lay down drop cloths in the garage or utility room.
- 4
Startup and handoff
We sanitize downstream lines, flush, check for leaks under pressure, and show you the alarm, the lamp date and how to bypass the unit.
What Moves the Price of a UV System
Your quote depends on how much water the unit must treat and what has to happen before the light can do its job. Standard professional installation is included for qualifying homes. Everything else is listed line by line before we start.
- Flow rate
- A chamber rated for higher gallons per minute uses a longer lamp and larger housing, which costs more but prevents underdosing when several fixtures run at once.
- Pretreatment needs
- If your water test shows hardness or iron that would foul the sleeve, a softener or filter ahead of the UV may be part of the recommendation.
- Plumbing and electrical access
- A main line in an open garage is quicker than one behind finished drywall. Adding an outlet near the unit adds cost.
- Controller features
- Basic units have a lamp-failure alarm. Models with a UV intensity sensor and solenoid shutoff cost more and suit households where a missed dose matters most.
UV Water Treatment Questions
Something not covered here? (972) 793-8402
Does UV remove chlorine or lead?
No. UV inactivates microbes and leaves the water's chemistry untouched. Chlorine taste is a job for whole-home filtration. If you are concerned about lead leaching from aging pipes or old solder, an under-sink reverse osmosis unit is what handles your drinking and cooking water.
How often does the lamp need replacing?
About once a year. The lamp keeps glowing after its UV output drops, so you replace it by date, not by eye. Clean the quartz sleeve and change the sediment cartridge at the same visit.
What happens during a power outage?
The lamp stops and water passes through untreated. When power returns, run cold water at a few taps for several minutes. If the outage came with a boil-water notice, follow the utility's guidance first.
Will UV change how my water tastes?
No. Nothing is added and nothing dissolved is removed, so taste and odor stay the same. If you want better taste, that comes from carbon filtration.
If the system ever leaks, will my homeowner's insurance cover the damage?
That depends on your policy, and we cannot promise how an adjuster will rule. What we can do is document the install with photos and written part details, and if a leak happens, help you record what failed and when. Those records give your claim a clear starting point.
